Unbecoming by Rebecca Scherm

5.0

I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy through my job at the Delaware County District Library. This book drew me in right away with Scherm's description of Grace. She crafts a protagonist that is flawed and human. She paints the picture of first love in a way that is realistic and not awash in a faux-magical light. Most importantly, first love is just a stepping stone in Grace's tale.
It will seem natural at first to draw parallels between Unbecoming and Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch. While both books are set against a background of antique restoration, I felt very drawn to the female narrator of Grace. And although both books deal with crime in the art world, the conclusions in each book are on opposite paths. The ending of Unbecoming may come off as a little loosely tied up, but I was satisfied. It is reflective of how Grace and another character (not gonna spoil that one) sort of blend with the world naively moving on around them.
I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent debut novel, and I look forward to reading any future works from Scherm.
