The Magicians by Lev Grossman

I really expected to dislike this book. After reading a few reviews on Goodreads and Amazon it sounded just terrible. More than one reviewer said it was "Harry Potter written by Bret Easton Ellis." If that doesn't sound like the worst thing ever, I don't know what it is.

Possibly because of my lowered expectations, I enjoyed this book. I didn't expect to personally like any of the characters. I found that I did end caring about them. Quentin is clearly a mess. And he pretty much sucks through the whole book. Although at times I found I could relate to him. I certainly have spent too much time thinking about fictional places.

- Minor spoilers ahead -
I was satisfied with the book until nearly the last page. It's clear that the author doesn't believe that people can change. Quentin is going to go off to more unhappiness.
