The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver

5.0

I liked this book for a lot of reasons. First and foremost was for both the plot and the writing style.

A couple of other things too in more detail.

1. The book is extremely detail oriented. It goes to great lengths to describe the details present at a crime scene. Although I’m not well versed enough to validate the veracity of all that’s mentioned about crime scenes, I nevertheless enjoyed their presence. For me at least, it added a dimension of an actual investigation.

2. I also liked how the character’s profile was built up over the course of the investigation with the table that kept making rounds over the course of the story. I could nap it to how it would be represented in a TV show as a whiteboard.

3. I also enjoyed the romantic arc - how Sachs and the Rhymed connected over common emotions albeit for completely reasons. It wasn’t in your face nor was it there just to exist. I would love to see how it progresses over the course of the series.

4. One of the victims ending up committing a crime almost makes you think why she was saved in the first place. I got the impression that it tried to convey that while trying to save someone from something bad you’re not in the business or trying to judge them for their character and then make a call whether they should be saved or not. All those are secondary questions that can be debated only after the fact.

5. A couple of years ago I would’ve preferred a more realistic ending to Sachs dying, after escaping death multiple times, but not anymore. I want to see more of her character developed over the course of the series. Also, I was rooting for her to not die and a sigh of relief passed over me once she was saved. Although cliche sounding, I prefer happy endings, if they are written in a good way.

6. The ending almost had the feel of a pilot episode of a TV series. Riding into the sunset with good background music, thinking the job is done until it isn’t. Another disaster rolls by and it’s duty all over again. I liked that touch to the story.

7. I had an inkling that someone close to home was going to be involved in the big reveal. Still, I liked how it was unravelled.

8. Finally, a bedridden person taking centre stage is a refreshing idea of a protagonist.

Overall, a lovely detail oriented read, with lots of twists and turns.
