Edges by Linda Nagata
4.0

Unlike the more hard sci-fi entries into Nagata's nanotech universe, this series is more like Star Trek. There's a ship, two parental figures, a cast of different personality elements, and a universe of mostly intelligently friendly humanoids with some bad apples for conflict. Each book visits a different world, tussles with an ethical dilemma about what it means to be good and to be human, and tech is a deus ex machina that resolves the central conflict at the last moment.
