I enjoyed this book so much. I really loved how the main character’s journey plays out and how she’s navigating two different paths, both in magic but also in her figuring out where she came from and the complexities that come with it. And how there are obvious connections between the paths that she sees
and then the reveal of this major connection at the end she never knew - I loved that so much
. The world building was great for me, and I found myself loving so many of the characters here. I also enjoyed that Bree’s blackness wasn’t overlooked but critically important for the story and her. I’ve seen POC characters be in books without their culture and race playing any role in the story so many times, especially in fantasy (when there’s POC at all), so this was a great change from that. Looking forward to reading the next one! Also, I recommend anyone who reads this also reads the author’s note at the end, even if it’s not your normal practice. Her process, inspiration, and intents when writing the book are so interesting and enhance the book.
