The Obsession
by Nora Roberts
So this is a story all about how my life got flip turned upside down...
So. This is a story about Naomi who, as a child, discovers that her dad has abducted, tortured and raped a student (and murdered many others) . Naomi manages to rescue the girl hes keot prisoner ina cellar and go to the police. Then as a consequence she has to move away to live with her gay uncles and change her surname.
The first third of this book had me completely hooked. I read 50 pages in one sitting in the bath. Couldn't put it down. Nora Roberts did a great job of portraying the mindset of Naomi as child and then as a teenager. I enjoyed the fast pace, the gay uncles, the sense of a dark secret in the family. It wasn't literary or poetic but it was real and alive.
Naomi grows up, fiercely independent, always on the move, and resistant to love. Then she buys this huge house to renovate, which overlooks a lake in the woods, she takes in a stray a dog (nothing like a dog for overcoming attachment issues!), and starts a 'thing' with local mechanic/guitarist / macho big bollox boring guy.
The second third really slowed for me. It was all wholesome community vibes, which is fine in itself, but ij this case... so dull. And, oh my god stop describing interior decor, we are not playing the Sims!
The romance was an element I was really looking forward to, especially considering how guarded Naomi is. But this dissapointed me too! Absolutely NO sizzle to be found.
I love dogs but... Can we not have the dog running off with the bra in his mouth during a sex scene?
Also the guy is all "I' ve got a sense about when a woman's going to be willing"(Willing?!?). Oh but dont worry he has a sensitive soul because he reads alot, he even reads Jane Austen. And..... it just so happens to be his love of reading that leads him to discover a book written all about her father's murders.
I've come to this from reading a fantasy romance where the weird beasty creature couldn't even kiss his human wife because he had a mouth full of sharp predator teeth... And I found that romance more convincing.
I waded through more descriptions of cooking and decorating the house to the inevitable disintigrstion of the stability Naomi has set up when a copy cat killer starts immitating her father. The most important thing I have to say on this is that the dog didnt die.
