Tells the story of Moira Belle Michael's idea to wear a poppy flower to remember soldiers in World War I, which she thought of after reading the poem We Shall Not Sleep by Lt. Col. John McCrae (which ends "we shall not sleep though poppies grow in Flanders fields."). After the war was over she campaigned to get veterans' organizations to sell poppies to raise funds for veterans services, and vets also made poppies to sell. A good subject for a picture book, ties in with current wars and veterans are always in the news today as well, sadly. Not really a biography, though, because it doesn't give her whole life story, other than to tell how she first became a teacher at age 15 right after the Civil War; the book primarily focuses on World War I and the poppy movement. Nice paintings illustrate it.
