The narrator in this college coming-of-age story keeps anybody from getting too close. He looks down on most of his classmates with elitist reasoning but allows himself to be chosen by a few people whom he seems to deem interesting enough. He feels a responsibility for them even if he doesn't let them understand him. Ultimately it's through these connections that he begins to change and to choose happiness.
