Warm Bodies
by Isaac Marion
Besides some minor things, there's nothing I can really put my finger on that I didn't particularly like, but I just don't have great feelings toward it. Something about it just didn't work for me as other books have. I still liked it though, overall.
Plot- Fairly simplistic in structure, with some unique things thrown in. It was pretty predictable, but I don't think the author was going for a super rich plot in this one. I also was disappointed in the world building I got, or lack-of. I am someone who loves rich plots, with great worlds, so that's probably part of why I wasn't blown away by this book. I felt like it really could have gone somewhere with the origin of how the world ended, how zombies came to be, what the hell Boneys were, etc...I did read this all in one day for the Booktubeathon, so I'm not really sure if it was fast paced or not, as I made myself read it in 2 sittings to keep on with my book-a-day goal.
Writing- It was simply beautiful. I loved all the metaphors, & imagery, it was great. At times, it was a BIT much, but overall it was very poetic, some of the best writing I've seen in a while, from the poetic standpoint. Also, even with all these great descriptions, the dialogue didn't fall flat. It felt real, & seemed like how people would actually talk, which was a plus. I feel like going from the beautiful prose of descriptions & inner musings, to the harsh truth of humans speaking can be tough, but the author did this well. Additionally to all of that, I found it funny. The author slipped humor into this book; dry, & sarcastic humor, which is my favorite.
Characters- Also another problem that I had in this book. I liked all these character's well enough, but I did not connect with any of them, or feel attached to any of them. I thought R's gradual development was done very well, & I liked him enough, but he was the only character that I felt anything for. I thought Julie was a fine character, I understood her struggles, & I liked her personality, but I honestly didn't really care what happened to her at all. I thought the side characters had some good potential, & I actually liked M, I thought it was good to see development from him as well. Also, R & Julie as a couple. I didn't get any "feels" from them. At all. I usually can force myself to feel something for a couple in the book, & get behind their relationship, but I couldn't for this one. It felt like insta love at first, & then I just didn't really feel the spark. Overall though, the characters were fairly well rounded, & they were quite funny. M had me cracking a few smiles, & I did find R endearing at points with how much he wanted to be human. I probably won't be remembering them a few months from now, where as I still think about June & Day from the Legend series, & I finished that many months ago.
Overall- As this has sat with me, I think I'll be giving this a 3. I enjoyed it, moderately, & I don't regret reading it, as I thought the prose was wonderful, & the plot was interesting enough, but I just wasn't blown away at all, & I think there is much room for improvement. I may pick up the sequel when it comes out, but it won't be high on my TBR. I would recommend it if someone is looking for a quick read, as it is quite short & does have it's good points, but it wasn't my favorite read.
