Star was a typical Black girl living in a racially divided city, except she went to private school. The events were fictional, but they could have depicted any police shooting of any young Black male. Kalil was only 16. He was a complex young man trying to survive nearly impossible situations. Star is navigating surviving her neighborhood and the good and bad that comes with it as well as her alter ego self at Williamson. She must learn to create a Star that incorporates both sides of herself.
