I overall really liked the story and our characters with their messy backgrounds. Two kids navigating a world that wouldn't help them that turned into two adults who found whatever they could to cope and grow from their pain into mentors to keep others from suffering like they did. It was heartwarming to see how well sculpted they made themselves, even with their current situations. Chronic pain is nothing to laugh at, and Eva busts her ass to keep her daughter's world going despite it and I fucking loved to see it. Seeing Shane do what he could to help teens heading the same way he did, connecting with them even if they didn't have anything in common and leading them towards better paths or at least making better decisions than he would have had me tearing up.

I had to drop 1 star bc the amount of name dropping took me out of the story completely, which is why I took 2 weeks to read a book that should have taken me 3 days.

I had to take another half star off bc the romance wasn't what I was hoping for. They had 1 cutesy, flirty date that ended with them banging (the cute part being kinda skipped over, but the sex was detailed) and then there weren't really anymore cutesy times between them alone, it was just sex. Then we have a 3rd act breakup, but they stay friends and the cutesy stuff only comes up in the last 30 pages, through text. I understand why it was written this way plot wise, but I just wasn't a fan of it.
