Born of Embers by Quinn Arthurs, Harper Wylde

3.0

a unicorn and a kraken are roommates…

3.4 / 5.0

And there’s a kitsune, a gargoyle, a puck, and a phoenix too for good measure. There’s no sex in this book but there are violent deaths, mention of grape, run always, and heavy petting. The whole story doesn’t get going until book 3, but this one is a good start.

The world is interesting, and how magic plays into it. The setting is very spartan, just generic Alaska and no real depth of location or setting. The characters are the best part of this book since the plot is on a slow boil. Wylde is building their relationship slowly with completely normal interactions that make them likable. There are no throwaways.

The action sequences are stunted. They are too wordy for the little bit of movement that’s happening.

Overall, I like this book and series. I will finish rereading them all as my schedule permits. Especially once the RH really gets going, in about book 3, then it gets going in plot too.

Until Next Time,
MC
