The Temptation of a Highlander
by Elisa Braden
slow-paced
It started out promising, but this was a disappointment.
Clarissa is a nice broke girl with a good head on her shoulders who used to be overweight, but had an off-page weight loss journey before the beginning of the book. Everyone is pretty relieved that she's hot now, especially her evil stalker. Her grandma is cool. Campbell is growly, and his superpower is really excellent wet dreams. I'm honestly not sure what else to say about him; I was hoping for a teddy bear oldest brother archetype with some hidden sweetness, but he was just cranky, large and dull.
The couple spends half the book trying not to be together for pretty tedious reasons that could have been resolved with a conversation or an "I like you; do you like me? Circle yes or no" note. There was a lot of manufactured angst and the damsel in distress vibes made this book geek like it was written 15 years ago. The villain is extremely cliche, and I'm convinced her name is Clarissa so that the audiobook narrator could use their best Hannibal Lecter voice and almost say 'Clarice' (no the narrator who did good work here).
Could have skipped this one, unfortunately; the first book in this series is the gold standard.
