The Red Pony by John Steinbeck

4.0

It's short and nothing on the level of Mice and Men or such, but as I slowly finish off everything he's written, I find even a simple tale of life in pioneer California is fascinating to me when he writes it. These are sympathetic characters and my edition also contains the short story Junius Maltby, which I liked even better and its Garden of Eden vs. civilization's "be productive / fall in line" juxtaposition. Happy until they found out they were poor. Society labels anyone poor or not bent to a task as lazy and unintelligent.
