Geekerella by Ashley Poston

4.0

This book was so cute and so much fun to read.

One day in Bali, I realized that I left both my physical book and my kindle at the hotel so I went ahead and got Geekerella at the bookstore.

What is it about ?

This book is a modern retelling of Cinderella where our main character Elle is a geek and a fan for this series called Starfield which can be compared to Star Trek (even though Star Trek does exist in "her world").
Elle's father died a few years back and she lives with her evil step-mother and her evil step-sisters. She works at a vegan foodtruck called The Magic Pumpkin and her life basically consists of school, chores, running her fandom blog Rebelgunner, chores, working at the Magic Pumpkin, more chores and dealing with her annoying step-family.
Elle being a true fan of Starfield is very upset when the news of the cast for the revival is announced as young heart-throb Darien Freeman is cast for the main role. Darien played in a TV series before and the Starfield fandom does not want him to be their new Carmindor. Elle blogs about and her blog takes off from there. So much so that Darien reads it.
Darien's manager had him signed up for ExcelsiCon, a convention for all geeks, so that he can do a signing and judge a cosplay event. But Darien, being actually a true fan of Starfield and knowing what the fandom thinks of him, doesn't really want to do this. He tries to reach the creator of said Con but little does he know that he's trying to reach a man who no longer lives ... Elle's father. So Darien and Elle start texting (she inherited her father's number) without knowing who the other is...

What I thought :

This book is so cute and so true to Cinderella. I mean you have it all:
-the step mother
- the step sisters
- Prince Charming (Carmindor)
- the Magic Pumpkin
- and a lot of the plotlines

This is a true retelling and as such I loved it. I loved the Con aspect and the cuteness and I just really really liked this book a lot. It wasn't the best book I've ever read but I am glad that I read it when I did. It was a cute contemporary with some LGBTQIA+ characters in it and all in all it was a lot of fun.
