Clarke is genuinely one of the most refined fantasy writers of her time. The set up and pay off of this story mixed with the beautiful prose does make for a “perfect” book.

I don’t know why this isn’t a 5 stars for me other than the fact that the book is slow at the beginning and it’s just not totally for me. I found the tone very sinister and even though I found the main character endearing I was so stressed that it took away from my enjoyment at times.

Still really enjoyed it I’m on the Susanna Clarke hype train
