This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart: A Memoir in Halves
by Madhur Anand
adventurous
emotional
inspiring
reflective
medium-paced
Please go read this book. I feel like I can’t form my thoughts into words about this book. This is a generational memoir that looks at Anand’s family as they immigrate to Canada from India and they seek to find their place in their communities. Half of this book is written from The perspective of her parents and deals with the relational complications that result from diasporic trauma and it made me cry thinking about my own parents em though their stories are very different. The other half is about Madhur’s own life and her learning to reconnect to her culture and find grace for her parents. The book can be started from either end and it’s physical layout is split and rotated so mimic the fracturing that is seen in the text from the partition of India to breakdowns in relationships. This memoir is so remarkably thoughtful and the prose is stunning. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
