If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay

3.5

3.5 stars

A fast-paced novel with an interesting plot, centered on a young, newly hired deputy sheriff, Poppy McGee, recently returned to her home town in Kansas after serving in the Military Police in the Army. A citizen is missing. A submerged car is discovered in a nearby lake but turns out to have nothing to do with the missing person.

I think it started off stronger and then over time lost a little bit of the hook. It just didn’t keep me as engaged as I would have liked. The story is told from multiple POVs, including Poppy and Ryan, and weaves in an intriguing mob aspect. Strong theme of family and what will you do for those you love. I especially loved Poppy's character: a war veteran struggling to find her place in the sheriff's department of her hometown.

The story's ability to keep you guessing and the seamless integration of multiple perspectives make it have that right hook even if it was a little lack luster in some ways.
