Frankenstein in Baghdad
by Ahmed Saadawi
an angle into the grief & fragmentation of war/colonialism: how do we piece lives and communities and cultures back together? what happens when bodily & national integrity has been shattered? the fact that it all starts bc when Hadi goes to find his friend, there are only body parts -no mourning is possible, and thus no moving on. and also no justice — the cycle of killing the victims’ killers which then becomes everyone — shades of innocence, of culpability. really interesting how the writer/writing appears at the end: its own piecemeal making into substance.
