Other People's Pets
by R.L. Maizes
If you like stories with great emphasis on the characters and in-depth backstory and development, this book is for you. I was rooting for the main character, but in a very different way, wishing and hoping for her redemption. La La is a very complex main character and on top of all her family drama, she has a strange "superpower" quality of feeling what animals feel, a strong animal empath. I wished the main plot of the story had been more about this quality, but was kept interested by all the drama that unfolds.
There were also a few pop culture references that I didn't understand, like mentioning The Sopranos television show, which I have never seen.
I also am one to not particularly care for sexual imagery and there were a couple moments in the book that I skimmed because of this content.
Overall, it was an entertaining read and I enjoyed the suspenseful moments, all the mentions of adorable pets and the drama behind how your past can shape you, and you choose to shape your future.
