Another great Jane Austen read! For a book written in 1811, these characters feel so modern and relatable. Each character is portrayed with either the love or hate that Austin bestows upon them. From Marianne, who is the passionate opinionated young woman, we all once were. TO Eleanor, who is much more grounded in the reality and situation in life, but still takes on more than she needs to alone. I appreciated that characters who you know you would be annoyed by in real life, like Mrs Jennings or Sir John, are shown to have other layers full of compassion and kindness. Contrast them to Mr. and Mrs. Dashwood, cruel and vane, and you truly to get to see a great swath of humans portrayed. It is clear that Austin was of a keen observer of human nature. Every single one of her characters feel so true to life. I think that is my main takeaway from this novel is how humans are fallible and beautiful all at once.
I would say for this novel, like Mansfield Park, I think my one complaint is the ending. I wish we had more time to really flesh out Elinor and Edward's relationship. More show conversations between them, even at the beginningof the novel. A lot of that is given in narration, and I just feel like I wanted more time to see their love develop and buy into it. So, by the ending I just didn't really feel or understand their love myself just knew Elinor really liked him for some unknown reason.
I appreciated that each bit of the story was slowly written out, and you really got to spend time understanding the characters and their relationships with one another. Austin, as always, just writes a beautiful book abot human characters and how they interact with each other. In the end I feel like this novel was less about the love and instead family dynamics and the balance between passion and reason, which I really enjoyed.
I would say that this has to be in my top three of Austin books, and I'm excited to read Emma. Would recommend this book to anyone!
Side note, I will say Colonel Brandon, at 35, is not old and does sound like someone I would want to be in a relationship with lol.
