The Accidental Guardian written by Mary Connealy is the first book in the High Sierra Sweethearts Series. This book is post-Civil-War and Deborah Harkness and her younger sister Gwen are traveling west. They are with a wagon train with other families. One early morning, Deborah and Gwen take two young children out to the grass when they here gunshots. Deborah goes back to discover that the wagon train and everyone on it has been shot and burned. They are the only survivors. They soon happen upon Trace Riley, has spent most of his life alone and he knows the pain of when one’s family is murdered. He takes them in to protect them. Since Deborah is a witness he knows she is in great danger. Even though his life has changed drastically, he knows what he must do to get justice the families.
