Midnight at The Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson was interesting in concept, but didn’t feel entirely grounded in the story. I feel like if you’re going to title your work surrounding The Electric, then that should be more of the focus, but I found that it felt more like an afterthought than the star. When it talked about The Electric, it reminded me a lot of Night Circus, but I did like the way this handled the awe and appeal of the situation. I think the stakes were fairly low, and instead of focusing on the really interesting bits, the book was more comfortable in the fluff surrounding those events. I did like the format of the letters throughout, but I wish this was brought into Adri’s story a little bit more. In the end, this book was well written, but didn’t drive forward as much as it probably could have with a little more action/stakes. This was a pretty relaxing read about what makes people family and how those relationships develop in unlikely ways.
