Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

My second foray into reading this. This time around I listened to the audiobook. It's always hit or miss when an author reads their own work but Emezi did a beautiful job. She really brought the book to life. This is a story that can be interpreted literally or figuratively.

"And so we were strengthened, because for beings like us, belief is the colostrum of existence.

Ada is an extremely traumatized character and the story makes you question if it was her circumstances with her upbringing or the beings within her that caused it.

A dark magical tale that is also relatable. A very strong debut from a unique voice. I have yet to delve into any of her other books but I feel that I should now.
