Beautiful prose and atmosphere. But the lack of depth, purpose and a definite conclusion as to why we followed this disgusting person around, made it a dreadful experience.
There are of course parallels you could draw between events and characters within the book to discover something of substance. But unfortunately it doesn’t fully justify the grotesque travelogue the reader is subjected to in order to discover the hidden meaning.
