Between the Water and the Woods by Simone Snaith

3.0

Between the Water and the Woods had a lot of potential to be a great read. I even marked it as four stars when I initially finished it. But then I sat with it and realized there were more issues than I allowed myself to see.

So I was totally hooked on the story. A young girl and her family see a monster and must go report it to the king. These villagers learn about technology and just how the capital is run.

This book is a lot of floundering around on the journey to the capital and in the capital itself. It was very slow-paced and gave descriptions of city life that didn't really matter in the end. Sure it's cool to know the styles or trends of the city but it was only written to showcase just how different the MC was.

As for the romance, I needed something more. These two came off as hating each to gushing over one another in a matter of a couple of pages. I needed something more for their development. It felt like a lot of information was told to our MC about the main love interest without him actually telling her anything. With the amount of time they were together, I wanted the two to actually bond over something. Like, the crush on each other is fine but make the romance deeper for how quick it happens.

I will compliment the ending twist of the story. I did not see it coming and was screaming on a plane when it happened. The illustrations are also interesting and beautiful. I would've liked to see more of them throughout.

I don't think this book will be more than a standalone but I would like a follow-up on how the world adjusts to new revelations.
