Crime and Punishment
by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Dostoevsky can write characters that, in lesser hands would be egregious caricatures. Instead, they’re relatable, funny, and ideologically diverse. You wrestle with your empathy for Rodya, and you wonder at his sheer dumb luck. The epilogue was perfection, and the entirety of the novel felt so human. Dostoevsky has seen humanity, and distilled it onto the page.
