The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

4.0

This book really had me hooked. It's really charming, fantastical, and truly wholesome. It kind of feels like a combination og Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children and Up, with an added whimsical atmosphere.

What I liked most about it was the personalities of the six children that our main character, Linus, meets. I loved every single one of them and would die for them in an instant. My favourites were Talia and Lucy, but really, all of them had my heart.

Despite this, I have a few negative points:

1) Sometimes it was a little bit too on the nose with the message we are supposed to learn. I would have preferred if it hadn't been spoken out so many times. It became quite repetitive. But then, this is a children's book, so this is kind of forgiven.

Another thing related to it being a children's book is that it was very predictable. From the beginning of the story I understood where it was going, and I was never really surprised, par the fun and creative characters Klune created. But for me this wasn't really a negative, I still enjoyed the story.
Spoiler (Spoiler: I even predicted the relationship between Zoe and Helen)

2) It was a little bit too easy. Whenever the characters would be in trouble, it never really lasted long, and they got out of it without a hassle. This made me feel that the characters (or island?) were never in any real danger, which took the drama away from it a little bit.

Spoiler (Spoiler: This particularly includes the scene with the angry horde. They came out of that way too easily, and I felt it was a bit weird that Arthur would use a powerful moment on such a little thing.)

3) The romance was cheesy, and the main character was a bit too naive and clueless. But I can live with this.

All in all though, this was such a fun read and I hope I will be revisiting this book again!
