The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

3.0

I think the whole magic system just flew over my head because I have no idea what’s going on. The plot is painstakingly slow and it gets a bit repetitive as Jemisin introduces us to the other boroughs and tell us how diverse and fresh New York is as a town. Another thing I am wondering anyway, doesn’t the characterization get too stereotypical sometimes? I am not a New Yorker nor have I ever been there but the concept of a whole city or area being defined by a person weirded me out in the beginning.

I know Jemisin is trying to tackle so many social issues and criticisms here and there, but I think it could’ve been more subtle. Like… seriously… naming the villain as Dr. White and eventually calling her as White… wew… I know reverse racism isn’t actually a thing (it’s more of racial prejudice), but this book is really pointing the finger on White, LMAO. That’s quite harsh for a book that repeatedly claims that New York is diverse and open and a melting pot.

Then again, I am not related to New York in any way, so this opinion is purely an outsider view.
