Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George

5.0

Wow. I loved this book when I was younger, and man do I still love it now! I know that a part of it is due to nostalgia, but this reread felt so much richer than when I was younger. When I was little, I read it for the wolves. Now, reading it as an adult, I see the story of Julie and Miyax and the great conflict between the old and the new, the ancient ways of the Eskimo living in harmony with nature and the influx of technology and the new. I didn't get that before. It's a beautiful story, and the ending so very bittersweet.

At the beginning of the reread, I had planned to skip over book two and straight into book three, because I used to not like how little book two had to do with the wolves. Now that I've finished, though, I've decided to read book two and continue Julie/Miyax's continued journey finding balance between her two selves, the English-speaking girl living in a world of the new and the Eskimo girl clinging to the good of the old ways.
