I hate to make the comparison, but to me this book feels like the younger sibling of one of my favorite novels, Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea. It easily stands in its own right, but my memories of Starless Sea just kept creeping in through my read of this one. I liked the characters alright, some of them could have used a bit more work but I deeply loved Violet and her journey. There is a wondrous world in here, but I think I would have liked it a bit more with more of the world-building and adventure with a bit less of the character stories. Still, I enjoyed it!
