In Other Lands
by Sarah Rees Brennan
I have a lot of thoughts on this book that I didn’t have the energy to type out when I finished it at 4 in the morning. So here they are:
It doesn’t get five stars, but it was damn close. I just found the narration, although entertaining, a bit rushed, constantly in motion. There was never a chance to take a breather, and everything moved so fast. I would have liked it to be a bit slower, but that’s just me.
The sex stuff felt a bit weird, ‘cause they’re all young, although it was never fully explicit, but it did feel real, I guess, in that it was believable.
Also I take slight issue with the world - it never truly felt real to me. It seemed like a jumble of things I couldn’t quite piece together.
But other than that, I loved it. I loved the characters! Everytime Elliot said “bisexual” I was HEALED! And I had no clue that Elliot and Luke would be endgame, for some reason, even though it was obvious from the beginning that Luke had a crush, at least to me. God. I want to talk about them. They’re one of the few fictional couples I can see growing old together! They’re best friends and will be patient with each other and I’m emo.
Elliot’s parents suck and he deserves love.
Serene was amazing, too. I was Elliot going, “How come everything she’s saying [ie: reverse gender roles] makes so much sense?”
Elliot is so dear to my heart. All three of them are.
This book was so much fun when I finally got into it. Definitely going to look into more books by SRB!
