The Door by Magda Szabó
5.0
When the editors of the New York Times cull their long list of books to shape their annual best of the year list, the so-called Editor's Choice list, they usually do so only from the books that were published in the preceding year. The occasional exception is for collected short stories or essays that are in their cumulative importance significant enough. The other, and this is the case for the 2007 Hungarian novel The Door, is a work in a language other than English that is finally translated and published in the US market. This book, by an author unknown to me until now, Magda Szabo, not only deserves inclusion in the most recent NYTIMES list for 2015, but is one of the better novels I've read in the last few years.
