David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
5.0

DAVID COPPERFIELD is Charles Dickens' favorite among his own novels (says a lot!) and it's a classic literary fiction with imprints of his autobiography. This is my second Dickens and I AM IN LOVE 💚

It is hard to coherently review a book 900 pages long which I spent one full month reading. But two major thoughts that remain with me are i) it was an immersive experience and ii) I loved spending every moment growing older with David 🍃

Dickens' writing is one of the most beautiful forms of literary fiction I've read in a while. With so many remarkable characters, I am not even sure if Copperfield is the protagonist. The charming Steerforth, the devoted Pegotty and the feminist Betsey are only some of my favorites. Following his journey from boyhood to adulthood, it indeed is a moving coming of age novel. Even though it spans across hundreds of pages and is full of leisurely word-building, the writing keeps you hooked and often takes you by surprise! Dickens is so witty, which is contrary to the serious and dry tone that I was expecting going in. I laughed, sobbed, held my breath, felt goosebumps, and felt a warmth spread through me within these pages. This is an epic and tragic tale of marriage, friendship, betrayal, struggle, poverty, and family - full of sentimentality, not the senseless kind but tender and smart.

There is indeed an odd satisfaction when a chunky book turns out to be 'worth it'. If you're patient and willing to give it a chance, I think you may fall in love too ✨
