This was such an enjoyable reading experience! This is set in the Grishaverse, but is set in a different 'part of the world' than Shadow & Bone. This story is inspired-by/set-in imaginary Amsterdam & Nordic areas (+magic of course, because this is fantasy). The story centers around a heist and group of 6 diverse, flawed, multi-dimensional characters that are SO well developed and engaging. Each character was unique and felt like they had a fully-developed backstory that motivated their actions. The story itself was solidly fast-faced throughout (with some flashbacks that keep it grounded in the characters). I was became very emotionally connected to all the main characters, but I think Nina an Inej are my favorites. This book balanced character and plot really well and that made this a propulsive read for me. Also, the banter and dialogue was delightful. This does explore a few bigger themes, but that's not exactly the focus of the story. Overall I really liked this and think it's better written than the previous Shadow & Bone trilogy, and the character development and pacing are definitely better also. Also, you could skip the original S&B trilogy and jump right in here just fine but I think you understand the world and especially Nina's character a lot better if you read the previous trilogy.
