Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens
While this book wasn’t one of my favourites, nonetheless it was an interesting read. You can’t help but love and root for little Pip as he grows into himself. I enjoy the contrast between him and some of the other characters by the way he polices his own actions and has a strong sense of inner morality. Not only that, but his morality is tempered by his compassion even for people below his station, like the convict he helps at the beginning of the novel.
Overall, this book reads more as a commentary on the pitfalls and corruptions of class culture in England and how it can stain pure hearts with its greed and pomposity. I enjoyed the overall message of love and hope in the novel as well as characters finding redemption through their own efforts. Loyalty and friendship, in the end, truly conquer all. The world might be a better place if everyone could go on the journey of self discovery as graceful and kind as Pip.
