I received a copy of The Tryout by Christina Soontornvat and Joanna Cacao from Scholastic Canada in exchange for an honest review.
The Tryout is a graphic novel inspired by Christina Soontornvat's own childhood. When Christina and her best friend, Megan, start middle school, they are so excited to be at the new school and have high hopes for what this might mean. The girls decide that they want to try joining the cheerleading squad as it would be a good way to fit in. The cheerleaders at the school seem to be so cool and popular - Christina wants nothing more than to be accepted as she has already felt excluded as one of the only students of colour at the school. As the girls practice for the tryouts, they also deal with many other trials and tribulations that come with growing up - changes in friendships, peer pressure, bullying, and finding a place to belong.
This graphic novel about growing up is filled with laughter, joy, and the relateable anxieties that comes with trying new things and facing new challenges.
