Thunder Boy Jr. by Sherman Alexie

5.0

This is an incredibly poignant story about a little boy who has the same name as his dad. He loves and respects his dad, but all he wants is a “normal” name - and one that’s all his own. We get to journey with him as he tries on all sorts of names in his imagination, a name that fits his interests and abilities. Finally, he and his dad decide on the perfect name that honors who Thunder Boy, Jr. is, his family, and his purpose in the world.

Thunder Boy, Jr. is a sweet exploration of identity, culture, and family relationships with illustrations that are lively and captivating. The playful language makes it easy for my kids, who are almost-3 and 4.5, to stay interested. It’s a fun read for the whole family!
