Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker
5.0
I love when an author can take what would be a gripping standalone narrative into a larger cultural/historical fabric to create an educational page-turner. This book does that really well. It takes great care to turn the Galvins into individualized, rounded, and sympathetic characters while pulling back the curtain on the historical impact of mental health stigmatization and the thankless struggle of the scientists who tried to humanize schizophrenia research and treatment.
