1.0

Summary:

Forced to go to boarding school because her aunt told her so she is about to depart, except a ghost tries to kill her. There she finds two brothers, Lukas and Jared, who save her and tell her she is part of a secret society known as the Legion who protect the earth from the Demon Andras. Along with techno wiz Priest and sassy Alara they hunt for the parts of a device that will get rid of Andras once and for all.

My only reaction is this: What in the world happened?

Macon does not approve

description

Now, I may have had super high expectations but I expected a few things from this book:
-Quirky characters
-Interesting world building

But what I got:
-Bland characters
-Bland Setting
-Bland world building
-A whole lot of action and nothing till the last six percent of the book.
- And this little bugger:
Spoiler The fact that Kami is trying to steer the readers away from the fact that it is, in fact, Kennedy's father who is a part of the legion. It's so DAMN obvious because of the letter in the beginning that he's a part of it and why she doesn't get the mark because he isn't dead. Why make this such a huge issue. He has to come in the next book, but I don't know if I am going to read it. It's so obvious why make an issue. I mean there are clues littered throughout the entire book and this will probably be some big reveal in the upcoming sequels. Really?

First of all, Kami Garcia is one part of the team that brought us The Caster Chronicls in no way were those books perfect but they were entertaining for their supporting characters, different take on witches, and their sense of place (despite all the cliche and tropes surrounding the south).

The series had some problems, but characters like Macon Ravenwood, Amma Trudeau, and Marian Ashcroft, Ridley Duchannes, and Link made it worth it. What worked for those books were the quirky characters, quotable dialogue (mostly Macon's quotes), and the sense of place. This book had none of that.

This book had none of that. The characters I could barely distinguish from one another. In The Caster Chronicles series I was able to tell apart all the characters because they had a DISTINCT style of speech. Why didn't she capitalize on that particular quirk in her own characters in this story. It's like a step backwards.

The characters were paper thin tropes and not well fleshed out. I did not for a second believe the romance that Kennedy had with Jared or with Lukas at all. It went by too quickly and wasn't well developed. I also thought we have seen these characters before. None of them felt new, at all. That's the biggest disappointment. I wanted another Macon, Amma, Marian, Ridley, and Link. What happened? The only character I want to know about is Kennedy's father Kevin who left her.

The world building felt really thin as well and not explained. In The Caster Chronicles series it had its faults, and I thought this would have been fixed since she isn't a novice writer anymore. Apparently, not to much.

There was a lot of action, but it felt like constant action. There was a never a moment to breathe! Also, this book was super short. I mean there could have been more development in this book from the setting, characters, and everything. It might have made this book better, but I am not sure. It just was way too short for the kind of story she wanted to tell.

I also know that a lot of people are calling foul to Supernatural. I've never seen the show, yet I can totally see that Lukas and Jared are rip-offs of the Winchester boys. Seriously?

I also hated the dissapearing parent syndrome in this book. It's unnerving. What I liked about The Caster Chronicles is that there was a sense of family even if it wasn't traditional like Amma and Marian for Ethan. Macon, Aunt Del, Grandma, Reece, Ryan, and Ridley for Lena. I mean we got to know about some family members, but only through some passages.

This book failed on all accounts. What's disheartening is that it doesn't make sense. Kami Garcia wrote, along with Margaret Stohl, some great characters and had a sense of place. This book failed to capitalize on EVERYTHING that made The Caster Chronicles entertaining. It wasn't an amazing series, but it was fun. This series is bland. I mean I have no idea if I want to read the next book or not. At this point, I'll just wait for Kami and Margaret to reunite and write the sequel I am dying to have with
Spoiler Macon and Lila's backstory
.

In its entirety this book is rather forgettable and it’s a shame because I was really looking forward to it.
