While part of the same series as the first book, this follows two different characters, Dax and Roa, the brother and sister in law of Asha from the first book.
Roa, a scrublander, had helped Dax revolt against the evil dragon king, and had married him in hopes Dax would be a king to protect her people. Yet now, she believes she has been deceived. Dax appears to be a flirtatious, rarely sober, and indulgent king who cares nothing for his people. She questions why she gave everything up for him and old hurts emerge. She becomes so desperate, she finds herself in a plot against the king, and against people she cannot refuse.
Honestly, I was really annoyed with Roa. She was so stuck over her sister and her deception, that she didnt realize she was in her own way. Halfway through the book you're on her side, then once you see what's going on, it's like girl, get over yourself, be stronger. But in the end she grows. Im definitely team Dax, not Roa. If I wasn't so annoyed with her, I would've ranked it higher bc the plot, world, other characters, and concept where pretty good.
