When My Heart Joins the Thousand
by A.J. Steiger
As a person who is able-bodied and have only encountered Aspergers once many years ago, I feel like these characters portrayed these diagnoses well. Not only did it shine light on disability and how it’s perceived in society, but the story also showed the hardships that disability has on the individual and the people around them.
I listened to the audiobook of this story and at first I was very unsure of it. As the plot began to thicken and I learned more about the characters and I feel in love with the voice and the words.
At times I did feel that Alvie was being very self-centered and selfish, but it all made sense through the story. She was able to grow through her diagnosis and find things and people that she loves.
I adore a story where I can watch a character grow like they were right next to me. Stanley was also a gorgeous character. I love the descriptions of his eyes and just how delicate and chivalrous he was with Alvie.
I really enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in contemporary young adults novels and representation of disability and strong overall character growth.
