How to Stand Up to a Dictator
by Maria Ressa
“So how do you stand up to a dictator? By embracing values, defined early—they’re the subtitles of the chapters you’ve read: honesty, vulnerability, empathy, moving away from emotions, embracing your fear, believing in the good. You can’t do it alone. You have to create a team, strengthen your area of influence. Then connect the bright spots and weave a mesh together. Avoid thinking in terms of 'us against them.' Stand in someone else’s shoes. And do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” - Maria Ressa
This is another powerful memoir that I read! Ressa's life is such an inspiration. I am reminded of Janus Silang's quote saying "Natatakot ako pero okay lang matakot". Brave. Bold. Courageous and Exemplary Iconic. There are a lot of learnings and lessons that she shares in this book. I can say that she is like a Modern Katipunera who fights for disinformation and the truth.
There is a huge impact on me on how I should stand and what I am willing to risk to show the truth and dismantle disinformation. This memoir is such a beauty. I even reminisce about the part of me when I also join School Press conferences where I was shaped as one of the young journalists.
I can't even say more about this book since I am full of motivation to start something that can create a ripple of impact on others.
“Democracy is fragile. You have to fight for every bit, every law, every safeguard, every institution, every story. You must know how dangerous it is to suffer even the tiniest cut. This is why I say to us all: we must hold the line.” -Maria Ressa
