Evocation by S.T. Gibson
5.0
Thank you, Angry Robot Publishing, for the physical ARC. This is my honest review.
Evocation by S.T. Gibson is one of my favorite reads for 2024. A second chance polyam queer romance with elements of horror, demons, and magic. Set in modern-day Boston, but still has the feel of steampunk and ancient dark academia. I especially connected with all three of the main characters being in their late 20s, early 30s.
Character development is one of my favorite things to read. Some might say that not a lot happens in this book, but I would say the opposite about the characters. Each person is explored with their POV, switching between chapters. The characters are well represented in their POVs (you know from the narration style easily who's chapter it is), which isn't an easy feat with three main characters. The story was very good, and I was able to follow it well, even though I have not read the prequel story - Odd Spirits.
There was a lot of character development, and if you are like me and care more about vibes/characters than an over complicated plot line or world, you will love this book. If you are looking for something with a more complicated plot, vast world building, and fewer characters falling in love, you probably won't like it as much.
