With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

4.0

Some things to love about this story:

-RESPONSIBLE EMPOWERED YOUNG WOMAN WHO DOESN'T LET HER CIRCUMSTANCES DEFINE HER AND REALLY REACHES FOR HER DREAMS
-No real villain! Just characters with struggles, but still doing their best and often succeeding!
-Positive rep of Pregnancy Resource Centers. Oh my word, that made me so ridiculously happy. I loved the fact that Acevedo described them with such care, and that it's obvious that Emoni really took the time to think about her options. I appreciated that so very very much.
-Girl-girl friendships with supportiveness and no backstabbing
-Really accurate depictions of high school life! It's busy! Especially for a mom!
-Emoni's cultural heritage was so beautifully done and tied in perfectly and ack I really just loved her. She was beautiful! She didn't hit people over the head with her lineage! She was black/Puerto Rican and I just absolutely loved that aspect of this story. SO well done.
-Malachi was PRESH. Need I say more.
-Affection! Can! Be! More! Than! Sex!
-Emoni was SO RESPONSIBLE. Can we have more characters like this please.
-Supportive families!
-Beautiful relationships!
-Not wanting to cuss around your kid!
-Honestly there was just so much about this story that was BEAUTIFUL.

Smol list of things to not love:
-The language, while it's definitely less than a lot of books I've read of late, is still fairly present (f-words are definitely in there so beware of those)
-Some detailed-ish talk about sex and one detailed make-out scene, but Emoni's attitude about sex after her one mistake is very mature and I actually appreciated her frank view of not being ready to do it
-Drinking in one scene (Emoni doesn't drink though, except for a single glass of wine. Ugh I love how mature she is.)
(Also for the more conservative readers out there: Emoni's best friend is lesbian and is dating a girl.)

I really really liked this one okay! Truly excellent contemporary with SO MANY good feels and positive stuff and mature kids and just ACK. Yes please. 4 stars.
