The Bark of the Bog Owl by Jonathan Rogers

4.0

I loved this book so much that I want to buy a copy of my own to read again, and to underline, and to marinate in its thoughts over and over. I loved the rich characters and the seamless storytelling. I loved the powerful messages that speak to loyalty, courage, integrity, and dignity. The only thing I didn’t love was the setting- I could not wrap my mind around a fantasy world that was so familiar and yet undefined in certain particulars like time. It wasn’t until the end of the book, when an opposing army uses gunpowder as an unfamiliar weapons technology, that I could fix the setting in my mind. (And I never realized how human innovation defines historical context until this moment.)
