A Nearly Normal Family
by Mattias Edvardsson
“It takes a long time to build a life, but only an instant for it to crumble.”
The husband is a pastor.
The wife is a lawyer.
The daughter has been arrested for murder.
A Nearly Normal Family asks two questions of its protagonists: how well do you know your family and how far are you willing to go to protect your loved ones? The book is broken down into three parts as each member of the Sandell family answers those questions and tells their side of the story. This led to some repetitive parts, but, luckily, there usually was something new revealed with each perspective to make up for it.
Part one: The Father was by far the slowest. He was an infuriating narrator and my least favorite member of the family, but it set up the rest of the story really well.
Part two: The Daughter was really intense. Finally getting into Stella’s head was a relief, but her story was much darker than I had anticipated.
Part three: The Mother finally gives us some answers! I couldn’t put the book down once I got this far. I needed to know what the heck was going on!
I liked the ending although it wasn’t quite as satisfying as I’d hope, but was still worth the read.
