The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

5.0

The Sunbearer Trials is a mix of Hunger Games and Percy Jackson, but with some Mexican culture. Every ten years ten demigods are selected to compete in the sunbearer trials, which consists of five different competitions in different cities within the lands of Reino del Sol. The demigod who is ranked first will become the new Sunbearer, the demigod who is ranked last will become the sacrifice in order to keep the evil Obsidian gods trapped in their prison.

In the book there are two different types of gods, the Golds, who train at a fancy academy to become heroes. They also have impressive elemental powers with earth, fire, wind, and water. Then there are the Jades who who aren’t as highly looked up to. Their powers are are more so talking with birds, singing, and bad luck.

This decades Sunbearer Trial goes a little different than normal, usually it is all Golds who compete, but this year there are two Jades selected. And one of them being our main character Teo. The story follows Teo along with his jade cousin Xio and his best friend Nya as they compete in the trials and try not to be ranked last.

It was super refreshing reading this book and having so much LGBTQ+ representation in there. I don’t think I’ve read a book in awhile that had not only trans characters, but also nonbinary and queer. This is a very fun read that I would recommend if you love fantasy and mythology. I cannot wait until the next book of the duology comes out!
