Villette
by Charlotte Brontë
First, let me say that Villette was a bit harder for me to read than was Jane Eyre because of all the untranslated dialogue in French, which left me able to understand what was going on in certain scenes a little and guessing a lot. Still, I found this Brontë novel so engrossing and I was so moved by Lucy Snowe’s plight—her loneliness, her despair, her longing for love and a friend. This book is both beautiful and heartbreaking. I felt the full range of emotions as I read it. Or rather, as I listened to the wonderful narrator while I followed along in the book. In spite of Monsieur Paul’s terrible temperament and horrid habits, I still found myself rooting for his and Lucy’s relationship. I love the way their relationship changed over the course of the novel and I loved seeing the character growth and changes in their nature in these two characters. And even though I am not a fan of that ambiguous ending of the book, I still loved it. I can’t wait to read this story again one day in the future.
