The Remains of the Day
by Kazuo Ishiguro
4.5 stars for sure. I found it a bit hard to get into but I think that’s probably a me problem. I enjoyed discovering his time at Darlington Hall through his recollections alongside his current journey motoring around in his little Ford. His grappling with what it means to be a good butler is a particularly interesting thread. What happened with Miss Keaton did make me sad but I’m just a sucker for a love story but the conclusion of the situation was realistic. They both felt a level of care for one another, who else would you drive cross country for if not the person you love? Mr Stevens clearly loved her, I just don’t think he allowed himself to realise that until he was at the bus stop with her.
